Inuvik skiers and visitors alike will be ripping through the powder on local ski trails this weekend.
The 50th annual Top of the World Loppet will take place in Inuvik April 6-8.
The ski event has been organized by the Inuvik Ski Club since 1968, and aims to bring together current and former residents of Inuvik and the Beaufort Delta, and all cross-country skiers in recognition of the history of skiing in Inuvik.
As noted on the Inuvik Ski Club website, Inuvik is home to the territorial experimental ski training program, which has trained many Olympians including twins Sharon Firth and the late Shirley Firth Larsson of Aklavik, members of the Canada Sports Hall of Fame.
The opening ceremony will kick off the loppet weekend on April 6 at 6 p.m.
April 7 will see free technique and team relay events for all ages from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Medals and prizes will be awarded to the top three skiers in each race and category. There will be an awards ceremony at the community feast April 7 at 6 p.m, where Sharon Firth will speak.
On April 8, a final classic technique event will be held at 10 a.m., followed by a final awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
“This event will offer some of the finest spring skiing in the world,” according to the club’s website. “Sunshine into the late night, excellent snow conditions, and the unique setting of the Mackenzie Delta will ensure an unforgettable loppet experience.”
Ski rentals will be available on the day of the race, but are first come first serve.
